A new approach needs to be taken to recognising and rewarding academics. The assessment system currently in use no longer fits in with the existing zeitgeist and the social role of academics.
For years now, The Young Academy has been advocating a transparent, modern careers policy in which researchers are given clear career prospects based on their qualities in the broad sense. The year 2020 saw the publication of Goed voorbeeld doet goed volgen. Het nieuwe erkennen en waarderen volgens De Jonge Akademie (Good Examples Merit Imitation, the New Recognition and Rewards according to The Young Academy), showing – based on individual experience – how the new recognition and appreciation for researchers can be applied, and giving specific recommendations for how this can be done more broadly. Data on differences in promotion criteria were also collected via other young academies The results of the study will be published in 2021.
