The PhD Programme of the Future Members of The Young Academy actively consider ways to strengthen the relationship between science and society. A significant proportion (40%) of the scientific work at universities is carried out by PhD candidates, many of whom are young people with a temporary appointment for 3 to 5 years.
The PhD Programme of the Future
The aim of the PhD Programme of the Future is to help (new) PhD candidates and their supervisors, as well as administrators and policymakers, to establish more successful links with wider society during the various phases of their scientific research.
The purpose of this project is to create a dialogue between them and stakeholders from all parts of society throughout their research programme, from the initial research question to the conclusion. Too often, this is still merely ‘contact with the public after the fact’, i.e. when the candidate’s dissertation has been almost or entirely completed.
Podcast
A podcast about the PhD Programme of the Future was recorded during the anniversary celebrations and will be released in late 2025. The ultimate aim of the project is not only to increase openness about PhD programmes and spark dialogue with relevant sectors; it is also to encourage researchers at all levels of academia to embed their work more broadly within wider society.
