In the US, scientific practice and scholarship are at a standstill in many places because funding has been suddenly cut off by the new administration. There is also censorship, for example in climate change research and gender studies. Political interference in language, subject matter and methodology of science and scholarship constitutes a fundamental attack on scientific integrity, which has far-reaching consequences worldwide. After all, science and scholarship are an international business. This is stated by the European Federation of Academies of Science ALLEA in a recently published statement.
The Young Academy endorses the statement of the European Academies of Science.
Academic freedom is under pressure in many places. The Young Academy is also concerned about the situation in the Netherlands, for example the threat to the open and international nature of science and to freedom of expression, association, assembly and demonstration within universities. In addition, the huge cuts to higher education and science pose a major threat to the future of science, with far-reaching consequences for society.
