Julian Schaap

Julian Schaap is a cultural sociologist who studies what culture and media – especially music – mean to people.

In Dutch

He analyses how individual taste can coincide with a person's social status and how the consumption of music, culture and media can both foster a sense of community and exacerbate existing inequalities. His research shows how music, media and culture can influence our well-being by highlighting both their unifying and polarising effects. His research also examines the important role of cultural producers, ranging from artists, institutions and companies to the platforms we use to watch and listen to content. By working closely with cultural institutions and co-creating with people outside academia, he places the lived experience of people themselves firmly at the centre of his research. He also takes a holistic scientific approach to examining the complex effects of music, culture and media by collaborating with psychologists and medical professionals.
