Juliette Walma van der Molen graduated (cum laude) in developmental psychology and research methods at the University of Amsterdam and obtained a PhD degree in pedagogy at Leiden University. After working as an assistant professor at the Education Department at Leiden University, she switched to the Communication Science Department at the University of Amsterdam, where she received two consecutive postdoc research grants to work as a research fellow of the Royal Dutch Academy of Arts and Sciences (KNAW) and in 2005 was appointed Young Academy Member of the KNAW. During those years, Juliette’s research predominantly focused on young people’s learning from different media sources and the role of emotions, identification and attitudinal processes in educational and communication practices. Gradually, she started to focus on young people’s learning of science through different sources, their images of and attitudes towards science and technology, and the possibilities to professionalize teachers and implement new educational strategies that stimulate children’s creative and scientific thinking talents.

In 2009, she started working part-time at the University of Twente, where she was an associate professor at the Institute for Teacher Education, Science Communication & School Practices (ELAN) at the Faculty of Behavioral Sciences. In 2010, she established the Science-Hub ‘Twente Academy Young’ that facilitates joint projects between university researchers, schools, and regional science centers in the field of science and technology education. In addition to a variety of short-term and long-term projects, the Science Hub aims to actively involve and professionalize primary and secondary schools and their teachers. See:

Since 2011, Juliette also is the founder and director of the Research Center for Science Education and Talent Development (SETD) at the University of Twente ( The research center is set up as a network organization to cluster research into the development of children’s and teachers’ skills and attitudes in science and technology, effect studies of interventions in this domain, research into the context factors that may affect successful talent development in science and technology, the development of new measurement instruments, and new instruction technologies that may facilitate scientific thinking strategies. A major goal of the center is to translate results of the academic research into practical training, methods, and policy advise. As of June 1st 2012, Juliette Walma van der Molen is appointed Professor in Talent Development and Science and Technology Education at the research center.

In line with the interdisciplinary research approach, Juliette’s research was published in a variety of scientific journals, including Science Education, Journal of Educational Psychology, Pediatrics, Human Communication Research and Communication Research. She was editor of several books and serves on a number of national and international review and policy committees in the field of science and technology education where she aims to put theoretical expertise into effective practice.
