Kofi Makinwa spent 10 years at Philips Research Laboratories, Eindhoven, before moving to Delft University of Technology, where he is currently professor.

At Philips he worked on interactive displays, and later on mechanical and optical recorders, such as the first DVD players. His current research focus is on the design of smart sensors, which combine on-chip signal processing with sensor functionality. He has won several best paper awards, four for papers about smart temperature sensors. In 2005, he won a VENI award and STW Technology Foundation's Simon Stevin Gezel award. He is a distinguished lecturer of the IEEE.
