Marc Strous (born 1971) was one of those who discovered the anammox bacterium in 1999.

This organism occurs in the oceans and makes a major contribution to the nitrogen cycle on earth. Strous has been responsible for a number of breakthroughs, both scientific and technical. The anammox bacterium is already being used in water treatment in Rotterdam. Currently, Dr Strous is studying micro-organisms that can break down reduced methane. This process may influence the greenhouse effect.
