Niels Schiller started his academic career as a PhD student at the Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics in Nijmegen (1994-1997).

Between 1998 and 2000, he did a post-doc in the Psychology Department at Harvard University. He subsequently worked as a professor of psycholinguistics at Maastricht University (2000-2006).

In 2006, Schiller became a professor of psycho- and neurolinguistics at the Leiden Institute for Brain and Cognition (LIBC) at Leiden University. Between 2005 and 2010, he was a member of De Jonge Akademie. His research interests include syntactic, morphological, and phonological processes in mono- and bilingual speech production and reading aloud.
